A group of ironworkers standing behind Liberal leader Mark Carney as he delivered remarks about increasing Canadian energy production told the Western Standard how their jobs impact the LNG industry.
Carney, speaking to reporters in Calgary, moments before had promised to make Canada a global energy superpower — while at the same time imposing an emissions cap and refusing to repeal Bill C-69, legislation that prohibits new pipelines from being built.
Foreman Jason Green, standing alongside four of his ironworker apprentices, said a significant part of their job is to build and maintain oil and gas infrastructure, including emergency damage control.
They go to places like Fort McMurray, to work on repairing damaged LNG infrastructure, and will sometimes stay for nearly two weeks, working 16 hours a day to get the job done.
“We’re crucial to the oil and gas industry,” explained Green, adding the work is both intense and gratifying.
When asked whether he and his team support the policies put forward by the Liberal party, Green replied, “We’re always flexible, but ultimately we’re going to work with whoever’s in power.”
