The convict who leaped “Superman-style” across the judge’s bench in an LA courtroom earlier this year has been sentenced to 26 to 65 years in prison. The video of 31-year-old Deobra Redden on January 3 launching himself across the courtroom and tackling Clark County District Judge Mary Kay Holthus immediately went viral. He was in court awaiting a sentencing on a separate criminal case. .WATCH: Felon attacks Las Vegas judge during sentencing.Redden was charged with attempted murder and pleaded guilty but mentally ill in September, after Holthus and her law clerk each testified, according to local outlet 8 News Now.Redden, who was handed his sentence on Tuesday, said he is “not a bad guy” and said he never meant to hurt the judge. “I’m not a bad person, I’m not an evil guy,” Redden told Judge Susan Johnson during his sentencing. “I’m not making excuses for my actions, but I’m saying I’m not a bad person and I know that I did not intend to kill Mary Kay Holthus, I know I cared about her well-being.”Recalling the incident, Redden remembers thinking to himself, “Why are you doing this to me?”“That’s what I wanted to ask her if I think I knew myself but I’m not really sure,” said Redden. .Johnson, however, said Redden’s actions were an “attack on the judiciary,” reported the New York Post. Holthus, 62, showed little mercy in her victim impact statement, which was read aloud in court by Clark County prosecutors, per the Las Vegas Review Journal.“(Redden) made a conscious decision to kill me and make every effort to succeed,” she wrote.Defence attorney Carl Arnold argued for a lighter sentence of four to 11 years, noting his client was not on medication at the time of the attack. “I don’t think the answer is just throw away the key, give him a whole bunch of years. That benefits no one. We understand that a message has to be sent,” said Arnold, according to the Las Vegas Review. “Since he’s been on his medication, as you see him today, your honor, he’s being courteous, he’s being compliant and deeply remorseful about the events and what happened that day.”
