Premier Danielle Smith, speaking at a UCP townhall over the weekend, discussed her plans to distance Albertans from federal firearm bans.Smith outlined several steps her government has taken or intends to take on firearms in response to a question from the audience. The first step was “telling municipal governments that they are not allowed to participate in the gun law confiscation program without getting permission” from Alberta’s justice minister.“We also told the RCMP that it is not our policing priority — we want them going after bad guys and shutting down fentanyl labs,” said Smith..Further steps include establishing a chief firearms officer that has secured Alberta’s ability to process firearms licences, and the creation of the Firearms Act that allows the Alberta government to determine the credentials and the training somebody needs to participate in the federal government's firearms confiscation program. One other thing Smith is “exploring,” alongside Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe, is if there is “a way for us to create our own Alberta firearms license, that would allow us to save any guns purchased legally as of, I don't know, January 1, 2000, so you can own, keep and use in the province of Alberta.”
