One person has been arrested and several traffic violations were issued when police broke up a massive illegal street racing and stunting event in Langley over the weekend.

Officers had moved in peacefully, but were compelled to resort to force when the crowd refused to comply.

According to the Langley RCMP, the incident took place on the evening of January 24. Around 11 p.m., police responded to a complaint of a motor vehicle incident at an industrial area near Gloucester Way.

Footage by Instagram user @604.car_photography purports to show the scene.

When officers arrived, they discovered around 200 young people taking part in the aforementioned illegal activities. Following the issue of tickets, authorities prepared a vehicle to be towed, at which point the crowd "became unruly."

As back-up was called, a 16-year-old male "obstructed and interfered with the officer's investigation during the lawful execution of his duties."

He was told multiple times to "stand down," but did not, and instead "rushed at police." The officer utilized a "conducted energy weapon," which subdued him. Meanwhile, other bystanders were pepper-sprayed to keep them away.

Shortly after the 16-year-old was placed in a cop car, the crowd managed to pull him out. His freedom was short-lived, however, and with the help of the Integrated Police Dog Service, he was returned to the vehicle. He was subsequently charged with numerous offences, including assaulting a police officer.

"Not only is this incident extremely concerning from a public safety perspective, but the fact that these youth believed it was okay to obstruct police officers in the lawful execution of their duties, is unacceptable,” Spt. Harm Dosange said. "This behaviour is deeply troubling. I can assure our citizens that the Langley RCMP will be increasing patrols and employing traffic enforcement around the community where these activities are taking place. Street racers put the public and police at significant risk."
