Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appears to have few friends among Canada's electorate — particularly indigenous people.On Thursday, Trudeau gave remarks in Ottawa on the final day of the Assembly of First Nations’ three–day special assembly of chiefs. He faced tough question and comments from the audience on a range of topics including human rights, treaties, betrayal and colonialism before leaving under a cloud of shouts and heckles.Trudeau and the panel faced particularly tough comments from an indigenous elder who accused Ottawa of using "genocidal tactics" in its relationship with Indigenous people."I don't have to repeat what Canada did to us," she said. "Our people are sovereign. They're living in poverty on this great land that the Creator gave us. Our people should be prospering from this — not the immigrants — the Canadians. We should be today, and I can assure you, our peoples are not immigrants. The rest are."."We agreed to share our territories for settlement purposes only, and that has to be respected," said the elder."And you talk about reconciliation while you're still using your legislations to assimilate us, and to get rid of us, to take away our right of self determination."Trudeau rose to leave as the event closed. Some shouted, “Don’t walk away from us.” “Shame.” and “We are not a campaign trail.” Almost a decade after Trudeau was elected campaigning on a renewed relationship with indigenous people, indigenous leaders assert Ottawa's once considerable rate of progress is slowing — and they are worried about that momentum reversing if the Conservatives topple the Liberals in the next election, reported the Toronto Star.“Hopefully, with all the changes in this country over the last 15 years or so, it’s not possible to be a governing party in this country and still hold those same beliefs or treat First Nations, Inuit and Métis rights holders and rights-holding institutions in the way that the previous government did,” said Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) president Natan Obed to the Toronto Star.“But you never really can tell.” Trudeau was also heckled and booed at during the opening weekend of the 2023 North American Indigenous Games held in Halifax.
