President Donald Trump has responded to rumours surrounding stolen gold from Fort Knox by planning a personal trip with his sidekick Elon Musk to make sure it’s still there.
“If the gold isn’t there, we’re gonna be very upset,” said Trump late Wednesday night.
The Fort Knox Bullion Depository’s vaults in Kentucky hold more than 147 million ounces of gold, or $411,600,000,000. That amounts to more than half of the Treasury Department’s gold reserves, according to the United States Mint.
Trump has said on multiple occasions, including in his inauguration speech that he plans to usher in a new “golden age” for America — and apparently meant it quite literally.
He and Musk, who leads the new and now infamous DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency), have been hard at work auditing a laundry list of federal agencies, including USAID and the IRS.
“We’re going to go into Fort Knox to make sure the gold is there. You know that? We’re going to go into Fort Knox,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.
“We do want to look. I mean, we hope everything’s fine with Fort Knox, but we’re gonna go to Fort Knox, the fabled Fort Knox, and make sure the gold is there.”
Musk stirred the rumours earlier this week. “Who is confirming that gold wasn’t stolen from Fort Knox?” he wrote in an X post on Monday.
“Maybe it’s there, maybe it’s not.”
“It would be cool to do a live video walkthrough of Fort Knox!” wrote Musk in another tweet.
