An allegedly impaired driver in Williams Lake suffered a head injury requiring stitches after crashing into a truck while not wearing a seatbelt —an incident caught on police dashcam video. The Sunday crash happened around 3:00 p.m. on Mackenzie Avenue South, when a BC Highway Patrol officer spotted two vehicles — a white Ford F250 and a grey Toyota Camry — whose drivers were not wearing seatbelts. As the officer turned around to pull them over, the Camry slammed into the back of the Ford..According to Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, the officer found the Camry driver bleeding heavily from the head after hitting the windshield. He blew two “fail” readings on a roadside alcohol screening device. The 28-year-old Williams Lake man received a driving prohibition notice, had his vehicle impounded, and was ticketed $167 for not wearing a seatbelt and $368 for driving without due care and attention. The 19-year-old woman from Big Creek driving the Ford F250 also received a seatbelt ticket. She escaped serious injury because she had her seatbelt back on when the crash occurred.“This relatively low-speed collision, captured by police video, shows the importance of seatbelt safety and driving sober,” said McLaughlin. “The sober and belted driver walked away. The allegedly impaired driver did not see the police lights, did not react to avoid the hugely obvious truck in front of him, and would have died at highway speed.”
