After the first six months of 2026, Canada has granted permanent residency (PR) to 182,100 people — with the majority coming from one country. As reported by CIC News, between January and June of this year, it accepted nearly 41% of the feds' targets for PRs this year; in total, its target is to grant 380,000 PRs.A significant portion of these PRs are being awarded to Indian citizens, as recorded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).In the last six months, Indians have taken 24%, or over 44,000, of Canadian PRs.Originally, this PR demographic data was posted on X, but the Western Standard fact-checked the data by checking IRCC's publicly accessible records..The portion of Indian citizens receiving their PRs in Canada so far this year is quite substantial compared with the country ranked second for receiving the most PRs this year. This country is the Philippines, with over 13,000 people receiving PRs, or 7.3%.The third-ranked country, China, made up 5.3%, or 9,630, of all the PRs given.Though the feds advertise its goal for this year is 380,000 new PRs granted — there is an unwritten amount they do not disclose clearly. On the feds' website, they claim only 155,800 PRs were granted in the first six months of 2026 instead of 182,100..But this does not include the PRs granted for one time programs. This includes 2026 targets for protected persons PRs, a refugee program, at 46,000, and other "one-time initiatives" set at a 20,000 PR target. The feds admitted 11,300 extra PRs under the "one-time initiatives," as well as 15,000 under the protected persons PRs, bringing the total so far this year to 182,100.This also means the feds' real target for PRs in 2026 is 446,000..In 2025, Canada granted about 393,500 new PRs.
