It is with great sadness that Thursday we received news of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada. .At the Western Standard, we wish to express our deep admiration for her incredible service to Canada and the Commonwealth, her remarkable life, and on behalf of our staff and many like-minded readers, our condolences to her family..Through the generations, the Crown has been central to Canada’s system of responsible government. A head of state rising above political faction ensures the peaceful transfer of power. And in this respect, the Canadian Crown is the ultimate guarantor of our rights..In the modern era, Her Majesty was Canada’s longest-serving monarch. She counselled and advised no less than twelve Canadian prime ministers. .In 22 royal tours of her Canadian home, she presided over some of the greatest events in our national journey, from the opening of the St Lawrence Seaway through the opening of the Montreal Olympic Games, to the most important constitutional evolution of the last 50 years, the patriation of the British North America Act, now known as the Constitution Act..In performance of every official duty, Her Majesty has for 70 years earned our respect..However, we believe she also won our love. Certainly she meant to..At the news of her death, one of our editorial board members watched the speech in which she opened the Canadian Parliament in 1957. .She spoke so warmly of our country. She said she loved Canada. And she said she aspired to so reign, that Canadians would love her too..There is no doubt in our mind that she succeeded..She was our Queen. She was one of us. And proud to be so..Here at the Western Standard, we were proud of her. .After a life of service may she now rest in peace..And may God’s sweet comforts rest upon her family and all those who now honour her memory and grieve her loss..God save the King.
