Justin Trudeau is, as the younger generation would say, ‘so fake.’It was entirely appropriate for Canada’s prime minister to join other world leaders in Poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp. There, he said what he needed to say, that ‘the Holocaust was one of the darkest chapters of human history… We can and must remind ourselves and each other of our obligation to stop this from ever happening again.’However, as prime minister of Canada, he doesn’t have to go to eastern Europe to say that. Never mind talking about it, he has every opportunity to actually start doing it, right here, right nowFor since 7th October 2023, when Hamas terrorists infamously invaded southern Israel, killed 1,200 Israelis as they went about their business and kidnapped hundreds of others, Hamas sympathisers in this country have set about terrorizing Canadian Jews. The catalogue of outrageous behaviour is too long for this space, but alert readers will remember over the past months the rampages of mobs through the predominantly Jewish neighbourhoods of Toronto and Montreal, the harassment of Jewish students at Canadian colleges and universities, and the damage to Jewish-owned businesses and synagogues in both cities. In one Montreal case, shots were fired. Those with an appetite for more can find it here, and here. So, it being already too late to nip it in the bud, what exactly does Mr. Trudeau have in mind to nip it anyway? In a statement issued for the Auschwitz remembrance, the prime minister took note that “in the wake of Hamas’ horrifying attack against Israel and with the rise in antisemitism, Jewish people in Canada and across the world have felt unsafe in their communities, workplaces, and places of worship.”He added that this was “unacceptable” — a weak word in my view, better suited to yesterday’s coffee warmed over — but that “we are doubling down on our commitment to combat antisemitism and hate.”Sounds good. But, to what is Mr. Trudeau thereby committing the Government of Canada? He cited the Canada Community Security Program, the GoC response designed for the situation. It is supposed to enhance security at “community spaces at risk of hate-motivated crimes.” What that turns out to mean is a temporary program, that will provide the following:Security equipment and hardwareMinor renovations to enhance securitySecurity and emergency assessments and plansTrainingAll very well, but if as a Canadian Jew one is anxiously peeking out from behind the drawn curtains of one's Toronto home while a couple of dozen yobbos carrying Palestinian flags parade outside your front door, hurling obscenities and screaming for the death of Jews, what one wants is not an extra video camera or a security assessment. The threat is easy to see and horrifying to assess.No. What is needed is a strong, motivated police presence and to learn the following day that the perps remain under arrest. And what you don’t want, is another story about the police handing out coffee to people who want to see you dead.Nor does it give you any confidence in the Government of Canada when you (never mind as a Jew, but as anybody) recall that when one of its own events was swarmed by hundreds of militants, it folded and cancelled a gathering where the prime minister of Italy was to be the guest..Pro-Palestine protest leading to cancellation of Trudeau reception with Italian PM being investigated .The bottom line then, is that Justin Trudeau knows how to say the right thing. He often, however, can find a sufficient reason not to do it.No wonder the US President thinks he's a wuss. Canada's Jews are not in good hands. But then, are any of us?
