HEINRICHS: Are Canadians all in for globalism?

Gerald Heinrichs is a lawyer in Regina, SaskatchewanNo one calls out globalist politicians better than Marjorie Taylor-Greene. In 2024 the US congresswoman won her second landslide election, and she now chairs the influential DOGE subcommittee. On Taylor-Green's website she puts it straight: "Our government is supposed to work for the American people, not foreign nations." She says one of her country's biggest problem is that "globalist politicians in Washington, D.C. continue to put the American people last by putting their interests and the interests of other countries first." Anti-globalists like Taylor-Greene claim there has been an erosion of democracy so that voters no longer control many important decisions. American writer Jeffrey Tucker states the problem this way: "None of us have any influence over the policies of the WHO, World Bank, IMF, much less the Gates or Soros Foundations." .This scorn for globalist politics is not just an American phenomenon. Sometimes called sovereignistas, their numbers are growing in many countries including Canada.They are people who dare to resist mainstream ideologies on things like climate and mass immigration. Policies, they claim, that are debasing national sovereignty. They are, perhaps, believers in Ralph Waldo Emerson's self-reliance.This anti-globalist trend is not hard to understand. Businesses and communities everywhere struggle to deliver services or make a profit. But they are saddled with a host of do-good rules written far away and rubber stamped. A top-down philosophy, they say, that strips local autonomy. .In his book Controligarchs, author Seamus Bruner warns of a plan to "micromanage every aspect of your life."Regardless, as foreign-made regulations expand, the backlash should surprise no one.In the first days of his new presidential term, Donald Trump withdrew the US from the Paris Climate Agreement and the World Health Organization (WHO.) In March, Trump cut US funding to the World Trade Organization (WTO.) \All this was not unexpected because in 2018 Trump spoke his mind to the UN General Assembly. Trump said, "We reject the ideology of globalism and we embrace the doctrine of patriotism." He went on to say, "Wise leaders always put the good of their own people and their own country first. The future does not belong to globalists." .Argentine president Javier Milei sees even bigger faults. Milei warns of corruption and says that globalist organizations like the WEF are a façade for dishonesty and worse. In his 2025 speech at Davos Switzerland, Milei said they are really about "promoting a socialist agenda" through a "scheme of centralized planning".He says they create a "political caste" and have become "a gold mine for bureaucrats who aspire to omnipotence". Anti-globalists like Milei have learned that their mission comes with a price: name calling. Mainstream media and liberal politicians can hardly mention them without attaching insults like far-right, xenophobic, extremist or fascist. These critics contend that big problems need to be solved with international collaboration. And they laugh off allegations of world government and globalist control. Anti-globalism has not been a big issue in Canada's election campaign. The CPC states they will "scrap" the carbon tax. PPC leader Max Bernier says he would do more than that. Bernier says he would take Canada out of the Paris Climate Agreement and he would "stop sending money" to the UN. Meanwhile though, the Liberals have jumped on the globalist bandwagon with both feet. Mark Carney was chosen leader in what CBC called a "blowout win". Social media praises Carney as someone with experience "unheard of for most global leaders". According to the Toronto Star, "Mark Carney has been branded a 'globalist' and he's just fine with that." But there’s a problem in the distance. If Mark Carney wins, then Canada will be signing up for the next batch of global agreements. And then, as Canada and the US fight over trade and the border, Canada's green light to globalism will become another issue of serious disagreement. Canada's Liberal Party is all in for globalism.
