Re-elect the Liberal government and it’ll introduce a middle-class tax cut that’ll save most families $825 a year, said party leader Mark Carney Sunday.Wow! What more proof do Canadians need that Carney, elected party leader by 14-year-olds and foreigners, is the right guy to lead hardworking citizens into unimaginable prosperity if handed a four-year term as prime minister? That $825 will sure make amends for 10 years of runaway inflation, job-killing, and earnings-crushing Trudeau-led Liberal government policies inflicted on Canadians. So what if Liberal policies are savaging Canadians — from the energy industry in the West to fisheries in the farthest eastern province of Newfoundland?.Ideology, ‘science,’ and policies over people, that’s just the Liberal way.The Trudeau-government’s proposed oil and gas emissions cap will cost 150,000 jobs nationwide, and billions in royalties per year, warned Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.Carney and Environment Minister Terry Duguid gave mixed messages on where the Liberals stand on emissions caps. Expect the worst. Carney’s a climate, green energy zealot who praised creepy little climate activist Greta Thunberg.Meanwhile, Liberal-imposed snow crab and other fish harvesting limits threaten the “lifeblood” and the “bread and butter” of Newfoundland.Add to that Carney’s handling of the US/Canada tariff war — his strategy to smugly shun US President Donald Trump and not negotiate with him face to face, will backfire badly on Canadians. All Canadians. That paltry $825, if it even comes to pass, will evaporate fast.Just like the ability for hard-working Newfoundland fisherman trying to earn a living..Liberal Party supporters in the St. John’s, NFLD Convention Centre likely applauded the tax cut crumbs Carney, an admitted proud elitist and globalist, claimed he’ll bequeath Canadians.Meanwhile, fishermen trying to save their livelihoods crippled by limits the Liberals set on harvesting — while allowing offshore corporate draggers, including those from the European Union and Russia to have at her — peacefully gathered in the lobby to protest.Although Carney declared during his speech that he was “there to listen” to their grievances, police kept them out, blocked off the entire building, and escorted supporters in through side entrances.Carney didn’t muster the courage to step out into the lobby — busy elitists don’t mingle with unwashed peasants! — to even briefly chat with 100 protesting harvesters affiliated with the Fish, Food and Allied Workers Union (FFAW.).WATCH: Carney calls cops on fishermen protesting at his first election rally.Neither did federal Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson who set new rules causing Newfoundlanders struggling to feed their families to lose nearly 25% of the allowable 2024 catch of 9,998 tonnes of snow crab. The Liberals put limits on harvesting snow crab off the coast of Newfoundland (a 3K area) and imposed broader management of the sector. But local MP Thompson, who launched her campaign to get re-elected April 28 at the Convention Centre, likely won’t have a problem knocking on doors pleading for votes.“We did get into the lobby. We were peaceful. They didn’t let us into the event. We did speak with one of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary members who did go inside, speak to Thompson and was able to get us the meeting that we were requesting,” FFAW President Dwan Street told the Western Standard. “We did do that off site. It was myself and three fisher harvesters.”Street said it didn’t have to get to the point of the protest.“Those harvesters gathered in Grand Falls-Windsor on Friday and were told there was a call coming from the minister at 1 p.m. and then it became 2 p.m. and then it became 4 p.m. and then it just didn't come.”“All this could have been put to bed on Friday had she just revisited her decision and made the right choices.”.During his speech, Carney said his government would aim to create a sustainable fishery and look at making changes to structure of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.Maybe he would follow through. Maybe he wouldn’t.“We've heard those promises before, so until we actually see action, then we're going to find those promises pretty hard to believe.”“Snow crab is the bread and butter in Newfoundland-Labrador. The fishery is the lifeblood of our province, and these are very good rural jobs. We just feel like our fishery isn't getting the attention that it needs. Harvesters aren’t being listened to. Their concerns aren’t taken seriously.”She hoped the public entering the building “saw exactly what harvesters are dealing with and just how desperate they are.”It's not just rural communities that are affected.“These rural communities feed into urban centres like Saint Johns, Gander, and Corner Brooks.”And it’s not just snow crab.“Mackerel has been put under moratorium by the Liberal government. Northern cod, they haven't been able to get the increases that they want.”“And of course, we saw this year the lifting of the cod moratorium and a lot of that quota being given to offshore corporate interests.“So, we're looking at offshore draggers, big corporate draggers, over 100 feet … That's definitely a big concern when the EU, Russia, they all get a piece of the pie.”Street said that in “decision after decision” the Liberals have “put the boots” to these fishermen and are “absolutely not” looking out for them. They justify crippling livelihoods by pointing to that old standby — the science.“They say that this is what science recommends. We have some issues with the science. They changed the assessment model this year and what harvesters are seeing on the water just is not jogging with what science is saying.”Meanwhile, “everybody has to pay their bills.”“And it's not like in these rural communities you can just go find a job somewhere else.”“Fishing is not just an occupation in Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s so embedded in our culture. It’s in our social fabric and fish harvesters would be the first ones to tell you that. It's also a way of life. I come from fishing family myself and, you know, you eat, sleep and breathe it.”“These folks have children. A lot of them want to grow up and be fish harvesters and want to be involved in the industry. That’s a hard sell sometimes when all they see is mom and dad fighting every single spring for their livelihood. “At a rally earlier Sunday, FFAW In-shore president Jason Sullivan expressed extreme frustration at how the Liberals are “destroying” Newfoundland.“When you find carbon tax Carney this evening, you've got to show him you're not weak.”“No one gives a f*** about Newfoundland,” said Sullivan. Not so. The West, particularly Alberta, accustomed to being devastated by Liberal energy policies, can feel Newfoundland’s pain. And look, if anyone knows the hardship of trying to make ends meet, it’s Carney. Or actually his eco-warrior wife Diana Carney. Can’t imagine why the Brits were beyond furious in 2013, when Carney was the new governor of the Bank of England earning a $963,000-a-year salary, the wife complained on social media about the paltry taxpayer-funded $388,300 — $7,700 a week — housing allowance in expensive London. How dare Canadians not appreciate that ‘generous’ $825 tax cut carrot he’s dangling!
