Decriminalizing possession of narcotics – heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine and fentanyl – would make life more comfortable for drug addicts..It would get those pesky cops off their backs..It would save them the inconvenience of having to show up in court to face charges..But no one has explained how making them not accountable to the law would help them wrestle free from the demons of their addictions..Oh, politicians claim drug treatment programs will be recommended in lieu of criminal charges. Like those in place with revolving doors that barely give addicts time for withdrawal before being tossed back onto the street? Or those that have obscenely long waiting lists?.The argument made by politicians – and shockingly some spineless police brass – pushing for this insanity is that drug addicts are victims, therefore, needn’t be dealt with too harshly or held responsible..What’s next? Decriminalizing all crimes – break and enters, auto thefts, fraud, prostitution, robberies, hold-ups at the local 7-Eleven – because these ‘victim’ addicts need to support their drug habits?.Common sense and history tell you when drug laws are relaxed, drug use will increase and so will the multitude of crimes swirling around it. .Undoubtedly, the Liberals fully intend to decriminalize possession of hard drugs..That’s why they’re doing confidential polling on this issue, as was recently revealed by Blacklock’s Reporter..That’s despite solemn assurances from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau over the years that he would never, ever back decriminalizing possession of hard drugs..But wait, the Liberals introduced Bill C-22 in February in the House of Commons to make changes to the Criminal Code and Controlled Substances Act. If passed, it’ll include repealing several mandatory minimum sentences for all drug offences and some offences involving the use or possession of firearms..You know the Liberals are dead set on shoving something dubious through when they resort to focusing on the minority ‘problem.’ .“Serious criminals deserve to be seriously punished and kept away from our communities. But too many lower-risk and first-time offenders, including a disproportionate number of Indigenous peoples and black Canadians, are being sent to prison and locked up for too long because of policies which are proven not to deter crime or help keep our communities safe,” said Rachael Rappaport, a spokesman for Justice Minister David Lametti..Apparently, an argument for something stupid carries more clout if it isn’t just a ‘white’ problem..In January, Bryan Larkin, president of the Association of Chiefs of Police, during a virtual forum entitled Policing 2021, must have been reading from a script the Liberals handed him when he said criminalization of drugs has disproportionately affected the marginalized and people of colour. Yes, he supports decriminalizing hard-drug possession!.Drug dealers – many of them organized crime gangs – must be laughing hysterically at Larkin and other police chiefs who’ve thrown their weight behind this..What a gross betrayal to the men and women in uniform on the street who will be faced with the result of opening this hornet’s nest..Some argue if police don’t have to charge addicts, they’ll have more time to focus on other crimes like murder, assaults, weapons, etc. They’ll need it. The drug trade breeds these crimes. .And with their spineless bosses pandering to politicians to get funding while cowering from paid activists screaming to defund them, there will be fewer police to tend to inevitable carnage on the streets..What do you decriminalize? How will anyone keep up with what drug is legal and what drug isn’t? .There are so many variants. Drug dealers are adept at adding agents – Drano, laundry detergent, baking soda, etc. – to increase the volume of their supplies to hike their profits..Drug addicts are victims..Many are victims of people who hurt them so badly they use hard-core drugs to bury their pain..They are victims of the parasitic drug dealers who profit from the hell they live..They are victims of the perverts to whom they prostitute themselves so they can pay for that next hit..They are victims of their own choices..And they are victims of those who pat themselves on the back for supporting efforts like decriminalizing hard drug possession which barely puts a Band-Aid on their pain..Politicians and police brass wring their hands and lament the scourge of drug deaths, largely due to opioids. .Do something about it!.Commit serious funding, manpower and the will to go after the criminals – like doctors who over-write pain prescriptions that get patients addicted; drug dealers; and cartels shipping drugs in through the southern border and ports on both coasts..It’s just so much easier to mess with the Criminal Code..Addicts need help, not a pass on buying hard core drugs..Slobodian is a Western Standard columnist based in Manitoba.,lslobodian@westernstandardonline.com,
