SLOBODIAN: Tequila Sheila goes to new lows with her insult of Smith

Shelia Copps stooped to gutter talk to try to degrade Premier Danielle Smith’s integrity.Classless. Baseless. A dirty move.And certainly, far beneath the dignity of a former deputy prime minister of Canada.Or someone who was appointed an officer to the Order of Canada in 2012.It isn’t the first time Copps insulted a female politician in a foul, offensive way. We’ll get to former attorney general Jody-Wilson Raybould.Copps crossed a serious line with Smith. It is infuriating on steroids.Copps took to X, a place where some go to desperately try to hang onto faded relevance. She posted a demeaning sexual comment meant to sully Smith’s character. It was a cheap, outright allegation that Smith’s method of achieving results is less than honorable. Copps responded to a January 18 ‘I stand with Premier Danielle Smith’ post by Concerned Citizen who wrote: “Who else in Canada supports the political positions she has taken in the epic battle with the Liberal Government?”“How can you stand with her when she is bent over,” wrote Copps on February 1.Unbelievable. Bent over is a commonly used, extremely derogatory term applied mostly to women engaging in a particular sexual act during which they are exploited and dominated.Copps poked the bear in a big way. She’s being scorched on social media. Paramount are demands that she remove the Hon. before her name. Rightly so. It doesn’t sure belong there.Perhaps under immense pressure she’ll attempt to backtrack, claim that’s not at all what she meant using the well-known insult. Why would, could anyone even believe her?Copps has every right to disagree with Smith’s policy. Heated political debate? Bring it on, even if you are now hollering from the bleachers. The more the better.But Copps doesn’t have the right to crawl into the gutter to attack Smith like that.Hypocrite supreme.Copps piously posted in 2019 that: “All politicians should be treated with respect, women and men. Members of parliament should treat leaders with respect. Trashing your leader reflects more on you than on them.”She has admonished people for not attacking the substance of the issue and resorting to personal attacks like she does.“Premier Smith is queen of the wedge.”“Can’t you act like a leader for once,” Copps posted when Smith called out Trudeau for treating Albertans like “fools” concerning the carbon tax and parental rights to their children’s education.She wrongly accused Smith of being “no hero” and weakening “Canada’s negotiating position which hurts the whole country.”But callously attacking a woman’s reputation, any woman’s reputation, takes it to a whole new trashy level.There’s no need to attempt to defend Smith’s honour. Unlike Copps, no one can dispute Smith conducts herself with dignity, professionalism, treats everyone with respect — even the political opponents who attack her. But for not being on “Team Canada.” Smith stands her ground..HANNAFORD: Smith alone among the premiers but a head taller than any of them.A man could never get away with publicly stating what Copps said. Women? The nasty ones hide behind the feminist crutch under the illusion this makes them beyond reproach and hurl atrocious claims.Copps has applauded the likes of hardcore socialists failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who have done little to nothing to worthwhile to serve Americans well.Faux feminists like Copps embrace sisterhood when it is convenient.They can be cuttingly wicked when they lash out at women who don’t agree with them, strong women, successful women in the limelight, women they are jealous of. Didn’t Premier Smith look absolutely stunning and regal when she attended Trump’s inaugural ball!Opinion pieces Copps has written, and a scan of her X feed suggests she might suffer from a serious case of Trump Derangement Syndrome. She accused him of being a sexual predator and, in a vulgar way, a misogynist. She has a problem with Tucker Carlson and Elon Musk too.But Copps is big admirer, a fierce defender of everything Trudeau who has treated female cabinet ministers badly.Like her or not, Trudeau firing former finance minister Chrystia Freeland on Zoom — yet expecting her to deliver the budget — in December was unacceptable. Freeland defended herself on national television. Copps criticized Freeland for her lack of gratitude to Trudeau, giving him all the credit for her political career.“The prime minister made Chrystia Freeland minister for everything and she didn’t even have the courtesy to thank him on launch day. Trash talking Trudeau is not a good look,” wrote Copps on X January 20.Meanwhile, going back, Copps inserted herself into the SNC-Lavalin affair and trashed Jody Wilson-Raybould and former Treasury Board president Jane Philpott who resigned over how the Liberals handled the scandal. It wasn’t constructive input. It was a personal attack on both of them.Copps accused them of publicly “dragging” Trudeau through the mud, said they went “rogue” and dismissed these accomplished women as “inexperienced” and out for “personal gain.”In one Twitter exchange Copps basically called Wilson-Raybould a bi*ch.Copps was a participant on the World Economic Forum’s and Global Leaders of Tomorrow 1994 class.Despite holding several ministerial portfolios and twice serving as deputy prime minister (November 1993-June 1996, June 1996 to June 1997), her 29-year political career is rather unremarkable.She pushed for legalizing marijuana and ironically, women’s rights. Perhaps she achieved other things.But Copps is most remembered for is the Tequila Sheila nickname she was branded with after former Conservative politician John Crosbie was caught in 1990 misquoting lyrics in a Johnny Cash song: “Pass the tequila Sheila, and lie down and love me again.”Copps howled in indignant raged. Feminists went nuts shrieking in a crescendo of indignant rage.But it was OK for Copps to call Wilson-Raybould, who acted according to the law and with honour a bi*ch.It’s OK for Copps to post a sleazy, spiteful slur about Smith.Smith can handle it. She shouldn’t have to. But she will continue to serve with honour.The Hon. Copps? Not even close.
