Adult sexual themes promoted by the 2SLGBTQIA+ Pride movement don’t belong in K-12 schools — particularly not without parental consent. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith might not say exactly that, but the assertion encapsulates Alberta’s transgender debate. One side of the argument supports puberty blockers for children identifying as transgender through so called “gender–affirming–care.” The other does not. One side, represented by the Alberta NDP, believes gender is a cultural construct imposed by “heteronormative” bigots. The other, represented by Smith and the UCP, believes there are vast differences between boys and girls — and those differences should be celebrated and protected. Not that Smith and her followers are without blemish — there are bigots in the UCP. Many on the NDP side think it’s acceptable for children to attend drag queen events. But, some in drag culture are speaking out against the practice, while an Albertan has been arrested and convicted for protesting at library drag queen story times. Many on Alberta’s political left think boys and girls, men and women, should use the same bathrooms and change rooms in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion. They should also compete against each other in sports, argue many NDP voters, whose ideology migrates outside the boundary of liberalism. This isn’t to say members of the Pride movement — or the NDP for that matter — should be harmed, treated poorly or slighted. The opposite is true. However, it’s time for people outside the Pride movement to muster up some courage and say ‘no’ to the presentation of adult sexual themes to children. That also goes for the proliferation of online pornography available on smartphones and obscene literature in schools. Smith has taken the lead on an issue that should not be controversial. She is, after all, a classical liberal embracing a live–and–let–live philosophy. Some countries, including the U.K., are reconsidering the use of puberty blockers and sex changes for kids. Some jurisdictions are reconsidering progressive change room and transgender sport policies. Good for Smith and the UCP for advancing new legislation to help protect children and families from the flood of adult sexual content and gender extremism in schools. Several bills on the matter have passed final debate stage in the Alberta Legislature and are set to be ratified against the wishes of Pride groups, reported the Canadian Press, noting Smith thinks the bills are needed to protect children and female athletes. “One bill will prohibit doctors from treating those under 16 seeking transgender treatments, such as puberty blockers and hormone therapy,” wrote CP, adding children under 16 would need parental consent to change their names or pronouns at school."Another bill would ban biological males from competing in female sports “and require school and organizations to report eligibility complaints.”The Alberta NDP, including Rachel Notley, say Smith is victimizing vulnerable people"After almost 17 years in (the Alberta Legislature) today I watched as this legislature sunk to its lowest point ever," wrote Notley in an X post in protest of the bills."The UCP voted to breach the Charter and fundamental human rights of transgender young people and their families, to have equal access to healthcare. Alberta is the only province to act with this much callous cruelty. Trans rights are human rights and the UCP cares nothing for either.".What a shame that Notley, a brilliant intellectual and formidable opponent to Smith, would reveal such profound ignorance of science and the human condition. What she calls the "lowest point ever" and "callous cruelty" is really just Smith and the UCP doing what ought to be done — protecting children from adult sexual and gender themes — free from the influence of activists.Offering puberty blockers and sex changes to children, teens and young adults isn't healthcare. It's not compassion — it's genital mutilation carried out by left wing fundamentalists.
