The UK's slide into anti-free speech authoritarianism is hard to believe given the country was once a bastion of political incorrectness with the likes of Benny Hill and Monty Python.Thousands of people, illustrated by a video posted online, are being harassed and arrested by British police over "offensive" and anxiety-inducing social media posts. Many of the posts involve people speaking out against Islamic extremism, terrorism and the UK government practice of allowing hundreds of thousands of poorly vetted migrants into the country at taxpayer expense.Even the perception of racism warrants investigation and arrest in hyper-woke Britain..Many allege English Muslims are now special class citizens — protected by government and police while Islamic activists call for Jihad and Intifada against non-Muslims. Those speaking out against Muslim hate speech, immigration or terrorism are often harassed and arrested by police — some are imprisoned. In 2017 alone there were over 3,300 arrests reported in the UK for "online malicious communications."In contrast, there were 411 criminal cases opened against internet users in Russia in 2017.The UK's problem of persecuting its citizens was highlighted by the Taylor Swift dance class terrorist slashing in Southport, England.Multiple girls were stabbed to death, sparking widespread civil unrest across Britain. The official government line, as advertised by large media outlets, was non-terrorism.Some 741 people were arrested for speaking out online against the alleged perpetrator and UK immigration policies among other things. Many were rude and belligerent. It was revealed later the alleged perpetrator was in possession of an Al-Qaeda training manual titled "Military Studies in the Jihad Against the Tyrants."Another notable example of the UK's authoritarian, anti-British policies, is the Tommy Robinson saga. Robinson, who was labeled a racist, spearheaded the rape gang truth movement and has been jailed multiple times for refusing to be silent on the issue. He is currently in prison for breaching a court order. The UK has struggled with Muslim "rape gangs" targeting thousands of girls and young women — according to Robinson. Authorities did little to stop the problem for fear of being called racist.Of course, the overwhelming majority of British Muslims have nothing to do with terrorism or rape gangs.Tech mogul Elon Musk was threatened with arrest in the UK, primarily due to his social media posts on X that were seen as inflaming or inciting unrest after the Taylor Swift dance class murders. He is currently being targeted by EU politicians.Canadians beware. What's happening in the UK could happen here. Although the Online Harms Act — Bill C-63 — is dead due to prorogation of parliament, it could easily be revived should trouble befall Canada's conservative movement.
