There’s a scene in Godfather in which Michael Corleone comes up with the plan to kill the rival mob boss and the corrupt police chief in one fell swoop. His brother Sonny laughs it off and reminds Michael that it is business and he is taking it personally. Michael replies “It's not personal Sonny. It's strictly business.” Reminds me of the reactions of too many Canadians when it comes to the Tariff Sheriff, US President Donald Trump. Too many are taking Trump’s actions personally, when those actions are purely business. And, when Trump says “Canadians” or “Canada”, he means Prime Minister Trudeau. Trump is like an eagle circling a wounded, lame duck, taking his time before he attacks, waiting for the duck to get weaker, weaker, weaker. When it is at its weakest, the eagle strikes. Trump is all business in almost everything he says and does, yes, for a personal reason: he has a genuine love for his country, which Canada’s wounded duck prime minister has never demonstrated he has for Canada. Canada should be so lucky to have someone the likes of Trump, making decisions for the country, rather than a lame duck, shored up by an NDP buzzard that is just waiting for the duck to fail. Ironically, Trump may be bringing Canada truly together as a nation for the first time since the Second World War. Except for Quebec which is only Canadian on days the equalization cheques arrive. Quebec Premier François Legault says a west-to-east pipeline will never cut through Quebec. Watch his stance change when more money is offered. But to hell with him, the pipeline can run east to Churchill, MB, and from there send our valuable and desired energy to customers in Europe. That should get Trump’s attention because it would be a business deal, one that he will admire and likely want some of the action, maybe through reduced tariffs. There isn’t a single state in the US holding the country up for ransom and threatening to separate — Quebec, get on board or separate. Bon voyage. Trump and Elon Musk are taking down the Democrat’s bureaucracy from the inside out, and the Democrats are going ballistic because they are going to get caught being at the bureaucrat feeding trough for far too long. I’m sure the Liberal’s bureaucracy could use the same cleansing, but under Trudeau? No chance. Who in Canada could or would even try to accomplish that? Not our lame duck. Trump, like a growing number of Canadians, has no respect for Trudeau and you can’t buy respect, it needs to be earned. Trudeau has done nothing to earn respect, unless you’re a fan of blackface, groping teenagers, or insulting the people of the largest democracy in the world by making mock of that nation’s religious dances and customs. The same guy who told the chancellor of Germany there was no business case to sell Canadian natural gas to his country. Trudeau has no idea what business is, unless it’s charging five bucks to see drag queens dancing at children’s events. There is no one in the Liberal Party leadership who will replace him who will think any differently. They are all wounded ducks and that eagle is licking its beak to get the opportunity to circle above them. Trump, unlike our lame duck, has the respect of every world leader, because they know it’s all about business. So, Canadians don’t take umbrage. Trump’s suggestions of Canada becoming the 51st state, which are becoming more frequent, are all about business. The fact so many Canadians are taking this personally may be why he mentions it so often. Trudeau is poking the bear and poker players might win at five card stud, but never at poking the bear Trump is doing what he thinks is right for the United States of America and he has the attention of world leaders who are making their way to the White House to confer with him. He also has the attention of the Democrats who swam, drank and bathed in the Washington DC swamp under Joe Biden. Remember, it’s not always what’s being done, it’s how people react. Canadians, look up, see that eagle? Don’t take it personally, just know it means busines
