NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh said his party will not support the proposed GNL Quebec natural gas pipeline, pointing to strong opposition from Quebec.

Singh insists that any energy project must have social acceptability, align with environmental goals, and respect the will of Quebecers.

During a news conference, Singh explained that “in Quebec, we cannot go forward with projects where Quebec does not agree, and it is clear with LNG, Quebec does not agree.”

Singh also pointed out collaborating with indigenous communities and ensuring natural resources are refined within Canada to create jobs.

Singh said these principles form the core of the NDP’s approach to major initiatives, noting that all stakeholders must “work together as true partners.”

The NDP leader’s stance points to a broader push by the NDP toward green energy alternatives and environmentally friendly development.

He believes that environmental considerations should guide decisions around large-scale projects, especially when those projects face widespread community opposition.

Singh underlined the NDP’s view that any future proposals must balance economic growth with respect for the environment and local populations.

With Quebec’s opposition to GNL Québec now clearly in the spotlight, Singh’s comments will likely spark further debate on the best path forward for Canada’s energy sector.
