Sask NDP Leader Carla Beck is urging leaders at all levels of government to take immediate action to avert a potential trade war with the United States, warning of devastating economic consequences for both countries.

In a statement, Beck emphasized her commitment to ensuring Saskatchewan’s industries and workers are protected during this uncertain time.

“Regardless of how events unfolded today [Monday] in Washington, we are still working day and night to prepare for all possible outcomes,” Beck said.

Beck highlighted her ongoing efforts to engage with industry leaders and job creators in Saskatchewan, emphasizing the importance of their voices in shaping cross-border decisions.

“This week, my team are continuing to meet with industry leaders and Saskatchewan’s job creators to make sure their concerns are heard by decision makers on both sides of the border,” Beck said.

The looming possibility of a 25% tariff starting February 1 has raised alarms, with Beck warning it could lead to significant job losses and increased costs for families already struggling with rising expenses.

“A 25% tariff will destroy jobs and drive up prices on both sides of the border at a time when working families are already struggling to afford the basics like gas and groceries,” Beck said.

As tensions escalate, Beck called for collaborative efforts to prevent further strain on the crucial trading relationship between Canada and the United States.
