A man described in parole documents as a dangerous repeat violent offender and known gang member is now charged in a triple homicide.
RCMP say Nakota Rayne Pooyak, 31, of Sweetgrass First Nation, faces three counts of second-degree murder in the deaths of Brent Peters, 66, and his sons Matthew, 32, and Brennan, 34.
On September 11, 2024, Lloydminster RCMP responded to a well-being check at a home near 50 Street and 47 Avenue around 5:51 pm.
Inside, officers discovered the three men had been fatally shot.
Pooyak, who was arrested at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre, where he was in custody on unrelated charges, made his first court appearance on January 20.
Parole records revealed Pooyak has a long history of gang involvement and violence-related offences.
A judge once warned him, “You can either grow up and become an adult or you can keep doing this kind of thing and then you’re going to run the risk at having the Crown look to applying for dangerous offender status for you.”
The parole documents also showed that Pooyak was identified as needing a high level of intervention due to his “negative peer associations,” substance abuse, and poor decision-making.
In February 2023, a six-hour police standoff near Waseca ended with Pooyak’s arrest on a Canada-wide warrant for violating parole conditions.
Authorities said he first became involved in criminal activity as a teenager and later joined a gang.
He is scheduled to return to Lloydminster Provincial Court on February 20.
