Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has issued a measles exposure warning for two Regina locations, asking anyone who visited a Walmart Superstore and Bass Pro Shop on April 9 to watch for symptoms.
In a news release, the SHA said individuals at the Walmart on 4500 Gordon Road between 4 pm and 5:30 pm, or Bass Pro Shop (formerly Cabela’s) at 910 Gordon Road from 3:15 pm to 5:30 pm on April 9, should monitor for measles symptoms for 21 days.
The warning follows six confirmed measles cases in Saskatchewan earlier this month, including in the southwest, southeast, and northwest regions.
Measles symptoms include fever, cough, red eyes, fatigue, and a red blotchy rash spreading from the face.
Small white spots inside the mouth, called Koplik spots, may also appear.
Symptoms typically emerge seven to 21 days after exposure.
The SHA advises symptomatic individuals who visited the sites to call HealthLine811, their doctor, or nurse practitioner.
Those in medical distress should seek emergency care and mention possible measles exposure.
Highly contagious, measles spreads through air or contaminated surfaces.
The virus can live up to two hours in shared spaces.
Infection risks include rare severe complications like brain swelling or respiratory failure.
Two measles vaccine doses are nearly 100% effective, the SHA stressed.
Residents are urged to check immunization records via MySaskHealthRecord or contact public health if unsure.
