Premier Scott Moe said he’s pleased with a new 30-day reprieve that suspends the threatened 25% tariff on Canadian goods by President Donald Trump.

The extension allows time to address border security and combat organized crime, including the illegal fentanyl trade.

“It’s not a permanent solution,” Moe told CBC News

“But 30 days without tariffs is better than we were an hour ago.”

The move offers relief for trade-exposed industries such as potash, energy, and agriculture, which risked serious economic harm if the tariffs had taken effect.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has also announced an additional $200 million for an intelligence directive aimed at cracking down on organized crime and fentanyl distribution, along with the formation of a Canada-U.S. joint strike force focusing on border security and money laundering.

Moe acknowledges that some of Trump’s proposals may not align with Canadian interests, but stresses the importance of finding common ground on issues like reducing illegal migration.

“We must engage on what truly matters in our North American partnership,” said Moe.

“The integration of our economies is positive for both Canadians and Americans.”

Moe remains hopeful the temporary measure will lead to a lasting resolution, especially for sectors that rely on stability in cross-border trade.

“We should not underestimate the power of these 30 days,” said Moe.

“It gives us more time to show why our partnership is so valuable.”
