Regina Urgent Care Centre (UCC) finished its first year of operation, having served more than double its expected number of patients. Over 41,000 people received care for non life threatening illnesses and injuries in the facility's first 12 months."As a Family Physician, the Regina UCC has provided me with a unique opportunity to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and contribute to the community in ways not possible within my own practice," said Dr. Mary Andraws Mishriki, a family medicine physician with the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) working at the UCC. "This amazing team of dedicated healthcare providers worked very hard over the last year to usher in a new standard for urgent care in this province.” She pointed out that it offers patients same day care without needing an emergency department visit.The UCC is staffed by family doctors, emergency physicians, nurses, psychiatric nurses, and technicians to provide services like x-rays, ultrasounds, and lab testing on site..Nurse practitioners help manage patients with less severe conditions.Regina resident Murray B. praised the concept. "I strongly believe the Urgent Care Centre was very much needed in Regina, and it is such an elegant way to bridge the gap between issues that cannot wait for a doctor's office but probably are not considered an emergency," he said.
