Saskatchewan college to launch ‘indigenous equity seats’

Published on

Southeast College is introducing designated seats for indigenous students in its full-time post-secondary programs, starting in the 2025-26 school year.

The move is part of the college’s broader Indigenous Action Plan, announced during the recent grand opening of its Reconciliation Education Centre.

Eligible applicants must self-identify as having Canadian indigenous ancestry, though the process may change in the future.

College leaders see the seats as a way to make education more accessible for indigenous students across southeastern Saskatchewan.

“By designating seats, we hope to create a more diverse learning environment,” said Interim President and CEO Jody Holzmiller.

Should no indigenous applications be received by April 30, those seats will go back to the general applicant pool.

The "indigenous equity seats" will be available in programs such as business, health, community services, and trades.

Students accepted under this initiative will also have access to scholarships and support services tailored to their needs.

“It’s a great step forward,” said Sheena Onrait, Vice-President of Communications and Strategic Enrolment.

Southeast College operates campuses in Assiniboia, Estevan, Indian Head, Moosomin, Weyburn, and Whitewood, as well as on several First Nations in the region.
