The Government of Saskatchewan has pledged $20 million to help communities and individuals recover from the wildfires that swept across the province earlier this year. The funding, announced Monday, will support early rebuilding efforts in areas hardest hit by the fires, such as Denare Beach and East Trout Lake. The Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has established a Recovery Task Team (RTT) to lead the province’s response. The team includes representatives from the ministries of Government Relations, Social Services, and Environment, as well as Crown corporations.Preliminary assessments by the RTT identified debris removal and site clean-up as immediate priorities. These tasks are essential for helping communities begin the process of rebuilding homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.“We know that the road to recovery begins with clearing the way to prepare for rebuilding,” said Corrections, Policing, and Public Safety Minister Tim McLeod. “This funding is about safely rebuilding lives and supporting our communities every step of the way.”.The province has identified three focus areas for the recovery funds: debris removal and environmental testing, expanding or creating landfills near impacted communities, and providing project management support to assist local recovery efforts. Most of the funding will be delivered through the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP). Where PDAP does not fully cover costs, the province will offer additional support. The assistance is available to individuals and communities affected during the provincial emergency declaration from May 29 to June 26, or who were under a local state of emergency during that time. However, the funds will not cover services already addressed through personal or business insurance.Residents are encouraged to contact their insurance providers if they have not already done so.
