Saskatchewan posted the strongest building permit growth in Canada with a 31.5% year-over-year increase, reaching $290 million in April, according to Statistics Canada figures.The seasonally adjusted data shows the province's building permit values climbed from April 2024 to April 2025, outpacing all other provinces in growth."The continued rise in building permits demonstrates how our strong economy is delivering for Saskatchewan people," said Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding. "Our stable business environment and competitive incentives are bringing jobs, investments, and opportunities to everyone who calls this province home."Month-over-month growth also remained positive, with permit values rising 2.9% from March 2025. Non-residential building permits jumped 57.1% over the same period.Building permits represent the dollar value of construction permits for both residential and non-residential buildings..The construction boom comes as Saskatchewan's broader economy continues to outperform national averages. Statistics Canada reported the province's 2024 real GDP hit an all-time high of $80.5 billion, up $2.6 billion or 3.4% from the previous year.That growth rate ranked Saskatchewan second nationally and well above the national average of 1.6%.Private capital spending in Saskatchewan surged 17.3% last year to $14.7 billion, leading all provinces in growth. Projections show private capital spending will reach $16.2 billion in 2025, a 10.1% increase that would rank as the second-highest anticipated percentage increase among provinces.The strong permit activity reflects continued confidence in Saskatchewan's economic fundamentals and business climate, officials said.
