COVID-19 continues to have a long lasting effect on the lacrosse community, this time in the form of officials, or lack there of..With the opening weekend of the RMLL (Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League) and across all ages in Alberta, lacrosse cancellations are looming due to not enough available referees..Following the recognition of the shortage, the (ALA) Alberta Lacrosse Association has sent out a plea to the lacrosse community encouraging any current or former players who have the time and capability to consider picking up a whistle for the season so that kids can play..Of all the thankless jobs out there, refereeing may be right at the top..Although that may not be the case this upcoming season as signing up to ref will not only earn you a few fist bumps and high fives, but also the respect and appreciation of the players and parents for allowing them to play the game they love and have missed..Reffing is a great way to stay in shape, stay involved in the community, and the pay isn't bad at all either for a few hours of your time on the evenings and weekends. The ALA is now making it easier than ever to get your certification, having just added two more online clinics to get certified and start reffing right away..Without refs there is no sport, and without sport this year will continue to look as gloomy and miserable as the past two..If you or someone you know may be interested in taking up a riffing position have them visit albertalacrosserefs.ca for more information.
