Former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland is confident her nine-year stint supporting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is going to secure her as the next prime minister.
The winner of the March 9 Liberal leadership race will replace Trudeau and become Canada’s next prime minister. Other candidates include Trudeau’s economic adviser Mark Carney, who is the godfather of Freeland’s son, former government House leader Karina Gould and former Liberal MP Frank Baylis.
The un-elected Carney is the obvious frontrunner, with Liberals and government-funded media pundits favouring him over other candidates despite his apparent penchant for lying and connections to the World Economic Forum and the Chinese Communist Party.
Freeland, however, insists she will triumph over the Liberals’ sweetheart — and appoint him to a cabinet role once she forms government.
“I intend to win on Sunday. And when I win, I will invite Mark to serve as finance minister in my government. I think we'll make a great team,” Freeland told reporters Wednesday.
“I am the leader who is uniquely qualified to fight for us right now.”
Freeland referenced her December 16 letter of resignation from cabinet, where she warned of threats posed by President Donald Trump.
“I explained that the threat from Donald Trump was existential, that we needed to focus all of our attention on that threat, that we could not afford to spend money on anything else,” said Freeland.
“I have sadly been proven right.”
“I have committed to my constituents, to all Liberals and to all Canadians that, come what may, I’ll run in the next election.”
Carney has been under fire most notably for lying about his involvement with moving Brookfield Asset Management from Toronto to New York while he was chair.
Carney has also become notorious for refusing questions from independent media. When Western Standard journalist went to his press conference Tuesday night in Calgary, with invitation in hand, we were denied entry.
