A hatchet-wielding man was arrested following a standoff with police in Kitchener, Ontario on Wednesday evening.

The 27-year-old suspect, whose identity was not made public, had been fleeing from officers in his truck when he ran a red light and struck another vehicle.

Footage of the ensuing struggle was posted to X and has since gone viral. It begins with an officer pinning the suspect to the ground and tasing him before the latter gets up on all fours with the former on his back and manages to escape.

"He just tasered him," one witness says. "Didn't do sh*t."

The suspect proceeds to walk back to his car and grab a hatchet, at which point the officer pulls out his gun. The two circle one another, weapons drawn, until another officer tasers him for a second time, bringing him to the ground.

He tries to get up, but is quickly overpowered by five officers who work together to pin him down.

According to the Waterloo Regional Police, the incident took place shortly before 5:30 p.m. at the intersection of Strasburg Rd. and Block Line Rd.

The suspect had been caught driving while disqualified by the automated licence plate recognition system, and evaded capture when officers trailed him on the road. The three occupants of the other vehicle were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The suspect has since been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assaulting police, resisting arrest, assaulting a police officer with a weapon, disarming a police officer, and dangerous operation of a vehicle.

He was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
