A poll conducted by Research Co. between March 23 and 24 has found that the Conservatives and Liberals are neck and neck in British Columbia.
The NDP, meanwhile, is struggling to maintain support in a province the party once did relatively well in.
According to the poll, 39% of British Columbians are leaning towards the Liberals, while 37% said they'd probably vote Conservative. Just 7% said the NDP was their party of choice. Among decided voters, those numbers were 41%, 39%, and 8%, respectively.
When asked who they believed would make the best prime minister, 38% of British Columbians said Liberal leader Mark Carney, 37% said Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, and just 8% said NDP leader Jagmeet Singh. Those numbers were relatively similar across the country, save for Alberta and Quebec. In the former, Poilievre bested Carney by 17 points while in the latter, Carney was the favourite by 20 points.
While Carney and Poilievre were by far the most popular choices among those who voted for their respective parties in 2021, Singh was only favoured as leader by 44% of NDP supporters. Over 30% of those who voted for Singh's NDP last time around said Carney would be a better prime minister.
While Carney has only been in his current role for a couple weeks, British Columbians generally said he has done a good job. Just over 50% said they approved, while 37% said they disapproved. When it came to Poilievre, 44% said they approved, while 47% said they disapproved. Over 50% said they disapproved of Singh's performance.
When asked what they believed to be the number one issue facing Canada, 32% of British Columbians said Canada-US relations, 22% said the economy and jobs, and 15% said housing, homelessness, and poverty.
In the 2021 federal election, the Conservatives garnered 33.1% of the vote, with the Liberals, NDP, and Greens receiving 26.9%, 29.3%, and 5.4%, respectively.
As a result of the way Canada's electoral system works, however, the Liberals came away with the most seats, 15, while the Conservatives and NDP both took 13, and the Greens managed to hold on to one.
