Freeland to announce Liberal leadership campaign, day before Trump Inauguration

Former finance minister Chrystia Freeland is launching her campaign for Liberal Party leadership on Sunday, one month after her high profile resignation from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet.

Freeland, who negotiated with the Trump administration during her time as foreign affairs minister, aims to leverage this experience to differentiate herself from other contenders, including former Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney.

The race is heating up as Government House leader Karina Gould announced her candidacy on social media, where she will present herself as the party's rebuilding champion.

Candidates for the Liberal leadership must declare their candidacy by January 23 and begin submitting the required $350,000 entry fee to the party.
