Police have arrested a woman after she allegedly tried to set a Muslim woman’s hijab on fire at the Ajax Public Library on Sunday.

Kaley-Ann Freier, 25, was out on bail for a machete attack in October.

The unprovoked incident has prompted condemnation from Prime Minister Mark Carney, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, and local officials, who have labelled it as a possible hate crime.

Freier is accused of approaching a female student around noon, shouting profanities and throwing objects at her head before attempting to remove her hijab, according to police.

Officers say Freier then poured an unknown substance on the victim’s hijab and tried to ignite it with a lighter.

Library security intervened when the victim screamed for help, while Freier allegedly fled on foot.

She was found several hours later and taken into custody.

“It is disturbing that someone who was released on an undertaking after a machete-style knife incident in October is now involved in another violent attack,” said Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier in a statement.

Freier had previously been charged with possessing a weapon dangerous to the public, but had been released while awaiting trial.

Carney expressed outrage on social media saying, “Islamophobia is real, it is dangerous, and it must stop.”

Carney also praised police for their swift response, while offering support to the victim.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre claimed the “Liberal catch-and-release” bail policies allowed “hateful lunatics” to terrorize communities, calling for stricter measures to ensure public safety.

Freier now faces two counts of assault with a weapon and three counts of failing to comply with a probation order.

Investigators say they will consult with the Crown Attorney’s office to determine whether hate should be considered an aggravating factor in this case.
