Canada is set to become a central player in the battle for control of the Arctic, former White House strategist Steve Bannon said on Thursday.
Speaking during his Real America’s Voice TV show, Bannon warned that China, Russia, and the United States are preparing to fight for control of the region’s natural resources.
Describing it as “the new great game” of the twenty-first century, Bannon stressed that Canada’s strategic location and rich northern territories make it both a prize and a target.
“China and Russia, the great powers, and the United States fighting it out over the Arctic with the vast resources of the Arctic is going to be the new great game of the twenty-first century,” said Bannon.
The melting ice in the Arctic could open new shipping routes and unlock massive oil, gas, and mineral deposits.
Bannon argued that this shift will force Canada to rethink its economic and military ties, particularly with the United States.
Bannon pointed out that any nation hoping to benefit from access to the American market may soon face tariffs or premiums.
Bannon also suggested that Canada could move closer to the United States for protection and prosperity.
Pointing to President Donald Trump’s past statements, he described a future in which Canada might be offered an “inside track” if it agrees to ”deeper cooperation.”
At the same time, Bannon said Canadians must decide how to balance their sovereignty with the pressures of a changing world order.
