Progressive Conservative Rob Lantz will be the 34th premier of Prince Edward Island, following the resignation of former Premier Dennis King.

King announced his resignation on Thursday during a press conference, where he said it was the best thing for his family and his province. He never meant to be a “lifer” as a politician, he said.

Lantz is set to be sworn into the leadership role Friday afternoon at the residence of PEI Lt-Gov. Dr. Wassim Salamoun at Fanningbank in Charlottetown, who confirmed he had asked Lantz to form government, per the CBC.

A press release from the provincial PCs says the party unanimously supports Lantz as leader.

At a surprise media conference Thursday, King said he had decided to leave politics after a long conversation with his family, adding that he felt it was time to hand the title to someone who could take the provincial government further.

The provincial legislature is scheduled to return for its spring session on Tuesday.
