The man who vandalized the Komagata Maru memorial in Coal Harbour has admitted to stealing a golden retriever across the water in North Vancouver.Yuniar Kurniawan, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of theft and was subsequently sentenced to one day in prison and twelve months probation..According to the North Vancouver RCMP, the incident took place around 1:30 p.m. on February 12, 2024. The dog, Amber, had been waiting for her owner outside a Shoppers on Lonsdale Ave. and 13th St. when Kurniawan untethered her and took her away. As Global News reports, a number of people contacted police reporting that Kurniawan had been spotted on the SeaBus en route for downtown. Metro Vancouver Transit Police officers jumped into action, and arrested him at Waterfront Station.Kurniawan defaced the Komagata Maru memorial in August 2021, smearing it with white paint. He was charged with one count of mischief under $5,000, and subsequently sentenced to one day in prison and 12 months probation.
