Saskatchewan RCMP are investigating the murders of four people on Carry the Kettle Nakoda Nation, with a suspect now in custody.
Police responded to a report of sudden deaths at a home Tuesday morning, discovering the victims in a residence roughly 85 kilometres east of Regina.
RCMP identified the suspect as Keagan Panipekeesick, 29, who was arrested by Regina Police Service early Wednesday morning.
The arrest followed reports hours later of a man pointing a gun at people on Zagime Anishinabek, formerly known as the Sakimay First Nation, about 95 kilometres away.
RCMP have not confirmed if the incidents are linked but urged residents to stay alert.
“This is an unfolding investigation and we are unable to provide further details about the deceased persons at this time,” said the RCMP in a media release.
“We’ll do so once we are able to, and we’ve confirmed that next of kin notifications are complete.”
The File Hills First Nations Police initially ruled the deaths suspicious but provided no suspect information.
Carry the Kettle Chief Scott Eashappie alerted the community via Facebook, calling the incident a homicide after a break-in.
“Please stay clear of the area,” said Eashappie.
Nearby, Cowessess First Nation Chief Erica Beaudin shared condolences, pledging support.
“We stand ready to assist ... They don’t walk alone,” said Beaudin.
RCMP warned against approaching strangers or hitchhikers and confirmed increased patrols on the First Nation.
While a dangerous person alert was not issued, investigations into both the homicides and gun reports remain ongoing.
