Saskatchewan government is mandating that all school divisions create and publish changeroom policies by June 30 following a Western Standard exclusive report on the Balgonie changing room scandal.

The story revealed that two biological boys were changing in a Grade 7 female changing room and came out during the fall provincial election, sparking widespread debate on student privacy and safety.

Education Minister Everett Hindley said the new requirement is meant to ensure the well being of all students.

"We want to ensure privacy, dignity, and comfort of all students," said Hindley.

"It is also important for parents/guardians to be aware of the steps being taken to ensure the comfort and safety of all students. Through our consultations, many school divisions informed us that they are in the best position to make these decisions at a local level."

Under this ministerial directive, each school division must work closely with parents, guardians, and students to create guidelines that respect local needs.

The Ministry of Education has collaborated with school divisions to prioritize student protection while upholding transparency.

Once the policies are developed, they must be posted on the school division's websites and clearly explained to families.

Boards of education, elected by community members, are expected to respond to local concerns throughout the process.

The Saskatchewan government will continue to monitor the situation, ensuring that feedback from parents and students is respected and that changing room policies remain fair, clear, and effective.
